Chapter 8
The wick had burned dangerously low, ribbons of gold streaking across the surface of the kerosene. All Levi had to do to prevent it from flickering away and plunging them into darkness was reach out and turn it up, but Seb spooned behind him, a possessive arm around his waist, his chin poking into Leviâs shoulder as he nuzzled into his neck. Levi didnât want to break the spell. Too much had gone right tonight, and there was no telling when theyâd go this right again.
âHow come you get your own tent?â His words were slightly slurred, an effect of the sleepiness that had nearly won over his flesh after his release, but he was forcing his eyes to stay open as long as possible, no matter how tired he was. Every minute of this counted. He needed to be able to replay any part of it later. âIs it because youâre the barker?â
Sebâs breath fluttered along Leviâs ear, lips so close Levi ached for the stronger contact. âThat, and being around as long as Iâve been. Seniority plays a big part.â
âAnd how long is that?â
âLittle more than nine years.â
That was almost half Leviâs lifetime. He wasnât sure if he should feel really old, or really young. âThatâs a long time,â he whispered.
âHey.â Seb tightened his arm and jostled him a moment. âDonât go feeling sorry for me now.â
âIâm not.â
âBecause the way I see it, thatâs time well spent. Look at where it brought me.â
âBrookburnâs no prize.â
âI wasnât talking about Brookburn.â
A pleased flush crept over Leviâs already heated skin. The things Seb kept saying to him seemed unreal, figments of an imagination gone mad. As much as Levi wanted to believe them, thereâd been enough truth thrown around before here and now for him to know otherwise. Seb told people what they wanted to hear. That was his gift. But maybe Levi could pretend the sentiments were genuine for as long as the real world was on the other side of the tent walls.
âI canât even imagine all the places youâve seen,â he mused, changing the subject. Rather than put Seb on the spot, or worse, have him think Levi was considering running away with them again, he added, âWhich oneâs your favorite? And you canât count here. Thatâs cheating.â
Seb chuckled, the sound vibrating into his shoulder. âOnly people who cheat are the ones who think they canât win all on their own.â
âFancy talk coming from a carnie.â But he said it playfully, and poked the back of Sebâs hand. âAnd youâre not answering the question.â
âFavorite place Iâve ever beenâ¦â
Seb fell quiet, and Levi stilled. He wanted to know every tick and tock of Sebâs body as he contemplated his response. The soft rush of his breaths. The faint dampness where the tip of his hard cock touched the small of Leviâs back. The tangy sweat clinging to his pores. So lost in the sensory input, heâd almost forgotten what it was heâd asked by the time Seb began speaking again.
